Bullet For My Valentine 'Rainbow Veins' by Carl Addy

Rob Ulitski - 29th Oct 2021

Carl Addy directs a gorgeously vibrant and textural promo, combining performance with intriguing visual effects, for metal behomoths Bullet For My Valentine.

Beneath a series of warped animated layers, the video for Rainbow Veins intermixes glitchy performances with character vignettes - beautifully shot by Thomas English and graded by Jax Harney - blending together in a nightmarish hallucination.

The distorted VFX heighten the surreal aesthetic, whilst contrasting colour palettes lend an otherworldly style to the concept.

CARL ADDY:

It was challenging and rewarding figuring out how to achieve these effects in-camera.

"Taking inspiration from vintage in-camera effects to create a modern take on a colour-drenched psychedelic horror trip... We used glass and textural surfaces to create the distorted sensorial claustrophobia of a trip that won’t end.

"As colour takes over, the scenes merge into each other as the integrity of the image breaks down into a flashback maximalism of illustration and salaried images. Using hand illustrations to frame animations, we matched the relentless rhythm of the double bass beats to achieve a violence of flashing imagery. Also taking inspiration from the songs portrayal of drug-induced paranoia and malaise. We watch as reality turns to a shifting unstable plane of colour and texture.

"I had a blast working with the whole crew and Thomas English (DOP). It was challenging and rewarding figuring out how to achieve these effects in-camera, taking simple studio set-ups and pushing the distortion of form. At times hand-animating in camera reflections in time to the beat.

"I’m really happy with its Metal take on a vampire-esque ‘Lost Boys’-themed video, mixed with a glitch glassy cinematic view.

"I loved working with the same styling, makeup and post crew who have helmed the two previous BFMV videos from this album. It’s been really fun reinterpreting the ingredients into this final culmination of pure chaos!"
