Franz Ferdinand 'Billy Goodbye' by Diane Martel, Alex Kapranos & Ben Cole
Rob Ulitski - 18th Nov 2021
Iconic pop video director Diane Martel joins forces with Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos and Ben Cole to create the video for Billy Goodbye - taken from the Scottish rock band's forthcoming Greatest Hits album.Â
The black and white concept feels experimental and evocative of early music videos, focusing on a group of characters who descend into a riotous party, full of bottle smashing, karaoke singalongs and melodramatic facial expressions.Â
Glitchy performance setups, mixed formats and spliced cutaways add a textural element to the concept, aesthetically feeling very much like home-movie segments.
The randomness of the content and iconography in several of these scenes also elevates the absurdist nature of the piece.Â
