Daniel Ryan directs an intriguing promo for Hozier, a visual tapestry to investigate the link between war and commerce.Â
The video for Nobody's Soldier is a jolting mix of Hozier's passionate performance and conceptual cutaways - war iconography, mixed with the buzzwords of business. These compositions are not only intercut with Hozier's performance, but also clips of a conveyor belt of doll parts, and ammunition. Gradually it's revealed the artist is building a soldier doll.
It's a bold statement, engaging the viewer to ponder the price everyday people have to pay for corporate greed. And it works due to Ryan's meticulous vision and direction and Hozier's captivating performance elements.Â
