Renato Medeiros 'James' by Alfie Dale
Rob Ulitski - 28th Aug 2024
Alfie Dale directs a horror comedy for Brazilian artist Renato Medeiros, about a date in an amusement arcade that goes horribly awry.
Medeiros's song James is a melodic lullaby about addiction. Dale translates the song's theme into a surreal parable on the perils of carrying one's obsessions too far.
At first, everything is going swimmingly for the couple enjoying their time in the arcade. Until the guy (James) is distracted by a weird-looking teddy in the claw machine, which he just has to have. The girlfriend becomes suddenly ignored, as he becomes utterly focussed on 'winning' the weird teddy. His vain efforts to secure the toy in the claw go on and on...
The story is something of a counterpoint to the Brazilian flavour of the track, which makes it more intriguing. And ultimately, Dale provides a suitably nightmarish climax to his short comic horror.
