Rema 'Ozeba' by Jackson Lee Forsythe

Promonews - 14th Jan 2025

Jackson Lee Forsythe creates a thrillingly unorthodox dystopian vision for Nigerian rapper and singer Rema’s anthemic track Ozeba.

Drawing from the concept of ‘Ozeba’ - meaning ‘problem’ in the Edo language - Forsythe creates a tense undercurrent as we're thrown into the midst of a group of Mad Max-style characters, lost in a forest, and confronted by an unearthly army of mask-wearing forest dwellers.

This is a realm of chilly spookiness that we rarely associate with Afrobeat artists, but within this ominous scenario Forsythe captures Rema’s energetic performance with thrilling transitions that contribute to the forceful vision of the piece, by virtue of a myriad of camera techniques including motion control..

It stacks up to be a major statement from both the artist and director, for a track at the heart of the much acclaimed album Heis - which is Grammy-nominated for Best Global Music Album, and described by Rolling Stone as 'the strongest contender for the best Afrobeats album of the year'.

“It’s a privilege to be able to direct the video for such an iconic track," says Jackson Lee Forsythe.

"It was an incredible experience working with Rema, along with his team, who were all willing to take risks with the creative. Big love to the whole team who helped craft this universe.”

"Rema and his team were all willing to take risks with the creative."
