Yoni Lappin's return to music videos has been a while coming and it also marks a change of image by the artist formerly known as Koffee, now as Orignal Koffee. And together&nbsp;they make her homeland of Jamaica the real star of the show.In the artful,&nbsp;documentary style of portraiture that was Lappin's signature back in the day, with <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2016/04/11/mura-masa-what-if-i-go-yoni-lappin/40701" target="_blank">Mura Masa's What If I Go?</a> and others, the video for RAPID FYAH was shot over four days in Jamaica following extensive location scouting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Filmed entirely on 16mm by DoP Jermaine Edwards (My Father's Shadow, Ish), the video's main subject are the locals - fishermen, schoolgirls, bikers, a marching band and cheerleaders -&nbsp;placed within&nbsp;a series of jawdropping landscapes on the island.Featured artist Skillibeng is also strongly present in the film - a contrast to the&nbsp;laidback almost anonymous figure of&nbsp;Original Koffee - and the video was shot largely on the artists' home districts:&nbsp;St Thomas Parish and Spanish Town, Kingston.&nbsp;Through the alluring combination&nbsp;of the visuals and the music we become immersed in the authentic&nbsp;sense,&nbsp;atmosphere and rhythms&nbsp;of Jamaican life.&nbsp; &nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]

It turns out he is encountering&nbsp;an assortment of odd characters who are 'playing' John Newman.It's an engaging satire of the pop business and the real John Newman gives a nicely judged performance observing the activity around him with occasional alarm but mostly resigned equanimity. And finally, he gets involved himself, taking his own place in the group of 'John Newmans' for a dance routine.&nbsp;So this a very welcome return to videos by Louis Bhose too. He is a director with genuine funny bones, who relishes bringing surprising ideas to life.&nbsp;And he's certainly done that here.&nbsp; &nbsp; "John was very clear from the off that he wanted to play with the idea of a big comeback, and the idea of lots of people auditioning to be him was a fun one," says Bhose. "He even went as far as digging out all his iconic jackets from the loft, and letting our supporting cast wear them."I always liked the idea that after an offbeat series of auditions, there would be a fun, sweet moment where they all came together. And so came Harry Price's great choreo - which everyone (including me) learned. Having not made a vid for 18 months&nbsp;or so, it was a really fun one to get back into the groove with. And he subverts expectations of both artists: Anna, now a smouldering blonde, dominates the unusually passive Iggy (apparently tied to his chair). And it really works. There is a powerful chemistry between them, and exciting degree of intimacy.It's all managed with a very little in front of the camera apart from the performers themselves.&nbsp;Calabrese's use of the camera&nbsp;and lenses, together with the rhythmic edit, ramps up the atmosphere to memorable effect. Relta directs the official short film for Kojey Radical's new album, charting the artist's self-appraisal at a crucial moment in his life through an ambitious twist on music video conventions. &nbsp;In Don't Look Down -&nbsp;inspired by the album of the same name - Relta builds a world around Kojey that is, on the face of it, highly music video-friendly. It starts with a house party, but the host and star of the show, is struggling to cope with the situation. What follows is impressive, not just for Kojey's performance - which is excellent - including his frankness about experiencing any mental fragility, but that the film continues to subvert expectations.In the film, Relta and team have made a real benefit with their imaginative approach to environment is reflecting Kojey's state of mind. The rooms of a house (or houses) are revealed to be part of a connected studio set. This is clear in the part of the film devoted to the track Rule One&nbsp;- which was also released as <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2025/06/04/kojey-radical-ft-bawo-rule-one-relta/91309" target="_blank">a separate video</a> - but feels more meaningful as part of the bigger picture of the film, where the music video language of the dreamscape comes with a wider message.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Relta also deals with a sizeable cast, almost throughout the film, who are playing the both the important people and minor figures&nbsp;in Kojey's life, which also highlights both the pressure and the rewards. It allows guest performers Bawo and Ghetts&nbsp;to fit seamlessly into this world. But ultimately it all serves to push the theme of Kojey's personal journey, and his embracing of real-world responsibilities, in a way feels both personal and entirely&nbsp;relatable.&nbsp;So this is&nbsp;an inspired and accomplished piece, and an excellent effort from all involved.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]

Thankfully I had the most wonderful team around me who made my somewhat ambitious creative come to life."We built three adjoining sets, each with their own tones and emotional weight. The song felt militant and authoritative to me, and being Kojey’s first release in several years, I was keen to have his performance shots feel just as impactful, seeing him training in a surreal space &amp; powering the surrounding rooms."I also loved the way Kojey paid homage in the song and we managed to sprinkle in a couple more nods in the video, as well as seeing the next generation taking notes themselves. The entire video was shot in an intense three hour window and looking back it’s all a bit of a blur, but I couldn’t be happier with how it came together."

Earth is under attack and only a long-suffering pub barman - who happens to look different from everyone else -&nbsp;can save us, in&nbsp;James Ogram's terrific promo for South London indie-rock outfit Fat Dog.&nbsp;Ogram finds the sweet spot between satire and cartoon capers in the video for the band's rollicking anthem Earth Song, where a very tall, distinctive-looking alien (played by Peter Lidell)&nbsp;arrives&nbsp;for work in a London boozer, to face hostility and abuse&nbsp;by one of the punters. When the TV news channel reports on a UFO in the shape of giant dog&nbsp;hurtling towards Earth, other drinkers also pile in to blame him for the alien invasion. So he decides to act...[imgtoken data:1]Cue a cool change of visual style to mixed media&nbsp;animated montage, when the alien barman goes to confront the Big Dog in a titanic clash among London skyscapers. Vibrant colours and cut-out textures collide&nbsp;in a King Kong v Godzilla-style fight montage, with painstaking animated elements&nbsp;assembled by animation director Evan Lawday.Following his videos for Honeyglaze, including the UKMVA-nominated <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/06/17/honeyglaze-dont-james-ogram/86876" target="_blank">Don't</a>, this is&nbsp;a big step up in scope and ambition by Ogram, and he rises to the challenge. The video is a pleasure from start to finish - to enjoy for fun&nbsp;and also absorb the underlying message.&nbsp; &nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;"When I first received the brief for this video from Fat Dog, there was one major question to answer: how do I make The Man Who Fell To Earth meet Godzilla on a music video budget?" says Ogram.&nbsp;"It was a little tough. But once I saw Peter (our alien) in make-up, I was confident we could make it work."We filmed Peter against greenscreen, getting him to do karate kicks, punches and all sorts of other bizarre things, so our animator, Evan Lawday, would have something to work with. Peter was a great sport and we managed to get a lot in about an hour."We then had to cram all this story into the remaining two&nbsp;minutes of the music video. We focused on hitting beats and not over-shooting. Spending our time on little looks between Peter and the supporting artists and somehow, I think it all worked out."&nbsp;

In this eerie, sensory video for Junodream, director Ned Botwood imagines ‘a day at the beach’ with the lights turned out.The video for The Beach is a languid montage of lunar beach scenes. Sand, swimmers, sunbathers, dogs and dust are all incongruously reframed at nighttime. Anonymous characters stare at the horizon, waiting for the wind to change.&nbsp;Making stark use of negative space and roaming spotlights, cameraman Joseph Dunn shoots the beach like a dreamy moonscape. This is emphasised by a silvery colour grade by Ruth Wardell at Time Based Arts. Echoes&nbsp;of Radiohead's Street Spirit, in fact, and the song happens to be a&nbsp;catchy indie rock anthem in the mould of that 90s classic.[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]“I try not to stay at the beach after the sun’s gone down - It’s too eerie for me," admits Botwood. "Once the tourists go home, it’s just flat land, heat, bugs, wind and darkness. There’s so little visual context, you might as well be on the moon. It's&nbsp;shot by cinematographer Courtney J. Bennett in rich colour, with an intimacy that recalls Steve McQueen's 'house party' film Lovers Rock.That is followed by the funeral of the son - the procession behind the coffin and church service -&nbsp;shot in stark black and white, in which we hear iPray by Jords, Wretch 32 and Miles from Kinshasa. Also:<ul><li>Short films, more narrative longer music videos, wider content around artists in addition to just videos.</li><li>More brands getting involved in music projects to connect to a younger audience.</li><li>One thing I’d personally love to see is more women directing music videos and being recognised through award shows like the UKMVAs.&nbsp;</li><li>Finally I think we’ll see more artists directing or being more involved within the creative process.</li></ul><blockquote>It would be great for videos to get more investment to realise the creative visions.</blockquote>Any other comments about the current environment for music video production and music video creativity? What are the issues that we should be most concerned with?Sometimes it feels like there can be a disconnect between briefs, creative expectations and budgets. We always try to be creative to pull things together and leaning on our connects, giving opportunities to younger directors, etc. But it would be great for videos to get more investment to realise the creative visions.The crews that work on these rely on the jobs for their day-to-day income, so there should be accountability to ensure everyone is getting to eat properly.If you could ‘make a wish’, and reform or change the environment in which you work in one way, what would you wish for?&nbsp;&nbsp;Like all the previous questions I could write a mini-dissertation on this. Nia Archives takes a contemplative walk through late-night London, in the video for So Tell Me...Co-directed by Dan Emmerson and the artist herself, the video intercuts the gentle performance section with a series of slow-shutter vignettes, depicting the complex relationship between a young couple.&nbsp;Showing their lives in separate (yet interconnected) scenes, the video hints at the bond between them, which is confirmed at the end of the video when they detach from their different groups of friends to finally meet up.The bittersweet, romantic&nbsp;concept is beautifully executed, with the frantic cinematography reflecting the contrast of the track - a jungle beat set against melancholic melodies.&nbsp;Wonderful work.&nbsp;

Ned Botwood directs a big-hearted love letter to the West Country, by way of the American West for Metronomy frontman&nbsp;Joseph Mount's wonderful duet with Katy J Pearson for Love Factory.This song is an absolute peach, and the video highlights the special chemistry that is created by bringing fellow west country artist Pearson on board. Botwood channels the visuals from 1960s US TV variety shows, and the legendary&nbsp;performances by Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and June Carter, blending&nbsp;British and American rural iconography, superimposing Katy and Joseph into sweeping Devon landscapes.Shot with a distinctly American flavour by DP Jamie Harding, the video trades prairie grass for wheat stubble and wide highways for narrow country lanes. The landscapes were captured over a sunset-chasing road trip through the South Hams in Jamie’s van.[imgtoken data:1]Ned, Jamie and editor Kevin Corry worked to recreate a variety of old-school televisual devices. Shooting country vistas to line up with studio performances, then using a combination of back projection, black negative space and lo-fi blending effects to merge them together.Eagle-eyed viewers will also spot a handful of homages to American cult classics, including Paris Texas, My Own Private Idaho and The Night of the Hunter. “What I love about this song is that it just sounds like it’s always been around, like an old standard on the radio," says Botwood.&nbsp;"It made me think of that golden age of country performances on TV in the late ’60s. And if you absorb enough US culture, you can end up with this weird nostalgia for a rural heartland you’ve never actually been to. But it does make sense. When Dolly sings about her ‘Tennessee Mountain Home’, you understand that feeling instinctively, even if you’ve only been as close as the West Country. Katy, Joe and I are all connected to Devon. And sometimes when you’re down there, on the right day and in the right light, it really does look like the American prairie.”“Metronomy and Katy are two of my big indie heroes. So I was very sweaty when the email arrived! But I had the nicest team. Shoutout to Jamie Harding, who took me and his Arriflex sunset-chasing in Devon for two days. And Kevin Corry, who killed it in the edit.”

Trailblazing London jazz outfit Ezra Collective hit the ring in Femi Ladi's joyous video for Victory Dance.Customers of a cornershop receive a mysterious invitation by the shopkeeper, leading them downstairs into the basement and a magical space. Suddenly we are in&nbsp;a big hall, a boxing ring in the middle - not to witness a boxing bout, but the moves of jazz dancer Jay Allen, and a thrilling performance of the individuals of Ezra Collective, and then the group as a whole.[imgtoken data:1]This is the band's first ever music video, reflecting their position at the heart of London's resurgent jazz scene. Femi Ladi achieves a sense of wonder and real occasion by keeping things based around the performances, and top and tailing the piece with the narrative element involving the audience. It really works.&nbsp;"I’m a big fan of the Ezra Collective, I find their music so refreshing and unexpected," says Ladi.&nbsp;"I had a personal experience of hearing the band's music for the first time when I stumbled into a performance of theirs by accident a few years back. I instantly became a fan. So, we went with an Idea that had similar journey of discovery with the band playing a secret gig somewhere quite unexpected."

Leo Leigh's debut video,&nbsp;for Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood's new project The Smile, is a singularly intense experience. Leigh more or less dispenses with the causes of a trauma to confront the viewer with the harrowing results. You can only watch and wonder why - while listening to the altogether more gentle Free In The Knowledge.There are a couple of remarkable performances in the video, demonstrating distress and anguish in such visceral ways that it's hard not to think that some genuinely bad stuff happened just prior to when the camera started to roll.Halfway through, there are glimpses of exposition, snatches of other characters, and a ritualistic ceremony, suggestng the power dynamic of&nbsp;this haggard forest tribe. But it's those first two minutes that leave the most powerful impression.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Duncan Loudon imagines the life of a stuntman in his remarkable video for DJ/producer Tourist.Loudon takes us on to a film set, and into the world of stuntman-supreme Andy Bennett, as he goes about his daily business - and at the same time, also childminds his young daughter. And it all leads up to one of the most terrifyingly impressive of all movie stunts, when Bennett is doused in petrol and set alight, and then becomes a walking man on fire.Loudon establishes a mesmeric tone with a combination of documentary and impressionistic teasing beyond the frame of reality. Bennett also plays the part of the leading actor that he is doing stunts for. The division between the two is not easily distinguishable.But then there is of course the setpiece stunt. It is unmistakeably&nbsp;authentic,&nbsp;and Loudon takes us right into this feat of technique and sheer courage - and makes it poetic.&nbsp;Brilliantly achieved.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]

CC Wade captures Griff and Sigrid's backstage antics, in the light-hearted yet incendiary promo for Head On Fire.&nbsp;To mark this team-up of two inspiring&nbsp;pop performers, the Wade brothers let them loose in a deserted theatre to just have fun - which gets slightly out of hand. They have the run of the place, they mess around dressing up, climb rigging - and then set fire to the place. All without missing a beat of their performances.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Celebrating their friendship and not taking themselves too seriously, it's great to see Griff and Sigrid kick back and let loose - and show a slightly dangerous, even pyromanic&nbsp;streak.&nbsp;The visual feels like the perfect&nbsp;partner to the upbeat track, skirting with edginess - and the talented CC Wade, best known for their work with the likes of King Krule and other hipster types.&nbsp;make good on this opportunity to make their mark in the pop world.

"The track was only two and a half minutes, so it was a challenge adding in a nice narrative element and&nbsp;some surrealism to the project. But I think we managed to accomplish that."The story is based on Odeal our lead, trying to impress a love interest of his. Throughout the video we see their relationship blossom and his skating tekkers improve over every encounter at the skating rink. However due to his own mistakes, his poor efforts lead him into losing his new flame to another skater who's just much better than him."&nbsp;&nbsp;

DMND CLR founder&nbsp;Dijian Eccles and Andre Reid come together to co-direct a beautiful short film for Loski's Music, Trial and Trauma.&nbsp;This film is based on Loski’s rise in music, and the backstory of him growing up in South East London, Kennington;&nbsp;a fast-paced environment affected by poverty, crime and violence.Despite the wrong choices the protagonist makes, he’s always aware of an ideal lifestyle, and dreams of one day making it out through music. Despite his intentions, however,&nbsp;it’s never that easy….Strikingly emotional, the video is beautiful, brutal, heartbreaking, but eventually optimistic - and a true&nbsp;tour de force&nbsp;from two masters of their craft.&nbsp;

Having directed the superb official video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/09/12/pa-salieu-x-backroad-gee-my-family-femi-ladi/68390" target="_blank">My Family</a>, Femi Ladi has reunited with Pa Salieu and Backroad Gee to direct the live performance of the track for GRM Daily's Rated Awards 2021.The piece echoes the original&nbsp;video by focussing on the energy and charisma of the performers, and creating a strong look in&nbsp;black and white. Situated in a vast concrete space, Ladi uses lighting and camera movement to creates a different kind of edginess to proceedings, and emphasise on the terrific live vocal performances by Salieu and Gee.
