Jack Savoretti 'Too Much History' by RUTA
Rob Ulitski - 1st Oct 2021
A fierce chess match between two seniors has extraordinary consequences, in RUTA's splendid promo for Jack Savoretti.
The video for Too Much History is set on one of those rare and glorious sunny days in London. Sitting poolside in a swish, suburban location, two older ladies decide to play a game of chess - while handsome Jack Savoretti surveys the scene from a lifeguard's chair.
But then the OAPs' rivalry soon erupts into several offbeat scenarios, with real life ramifications. Blending lovely performances with breezy visual effects and a fresh concept, it's an excellent match to the summer vibes in the track.
RUTA:
The parallel stories in the video were like a puzzle we had to constantly re-arrange.
"Because of the title of the song, we wanted to come up with a concept that wasn’t related to love, or at least not the typical way of loving. It clicked to us that the obvious choice was doing something about the rivalry between two people, not only for the 'history' aspect of the rivalry itself, but also because of the love/hate relationship we could build from that.
"Having two elderly ladies was also the way of showing that this rivalry was there for more time than we think, and that even though they have been bad losers, they continue to show up at the pool again and again.
"The parallel stories in this music video were like a puzzle we had to constantly re-arrange, while somehow, still making it look like no piece had fallen off the table. Most projects are a bit like this, but this one was particularly important to maintain that order as there were too many pieces.
"Jack’s brief was really clear about having a summer and Mediterranean feel. But we had to shoot in London, and we had only one possible day to do it. So after doing all the possible rituals, we managed to land a beautiful sunny day in London that saved the day!"
