Italian-American director Luigi Calabrese creates a hypnotic visual for Anna Calvi's collaboration with Iggy Pop, with the artists generating considerable heat at close quarters. This is Calabrese's DC of the God's Lonely Man, not the released 'official' version. And he subverts expectations of both artists: Anna, now a smouldering blonde, dominates the unusually passive Iggy (apparently tied to his chair). And it really works. There is a powerful chemistry between them, and exciting degree of intimacy. It's all managed with a very little in front of the camera apart from the performers themselves. Calabrese's use of the camera and lenses, together with the rhythmic edit, ramps up the atmosphere to memorable effect. If you watch one version of the God's Lonely Man video, it should be this one.[imgtoken data:1]

Relta directs the official short film for Kojey Radical's new album, charting the artist's self-appraisal at a crucial moment in his life through an ambitious twist on music video conventions. In Don't Look Down - inspired by the album of the same name - Relta builds a world around Kojey that is, on the face of it, highly music video-friendly. It starts with a house party, but the host and star of the show, is struggling to cope with the situation. What follows is impressive, not just for Kojey's performance - which is excellent - including his frankness about experiencing any mental fragility, but that the film continues to subvert expectations. In the film, Relta and team have made a real benefit with their imaginative approach to environment is reflecting Kojey's state of mind. The rooms of a house (or houses) are revealed to be part of a connected studio set. This is clear in the part of the film devoted to the track Rule One - which was also released as a separate video - but feels more meaningful as part of the bigger picture of the film, where the music video language of the dreamscape comes with a wider message. Relta also deals with a sizeable cast, almost throughout the film, who are playing the both the important people and minor figures in Kojey's life, which also highlights both the pressure and the rewards. It allows guest performers Bawo and Ghetts to fit seamlessly into this world. But ultimately it all serves to push the theme of Kojey's personal journey, and his embracing of real-world responsibilities, in a way feels both personal and entirely relatable. So this is an inspired and accomplished piece, and an excellent effort from all involved. [imgtoken data:1] [imgtoken data:2]

For the first single from multi-hyphenate artist and rapper Kojey Radical after a three-year hiatus, Relta directs a compelling video capturing his performance and how it radiates through a series of connected rooms. The video for Rule One unfolds in a kinetic style, beginning as Kojey performs as he exercises vigourously on a running machine, then visually panning through adjoining rooms - a group of girls' listening to the music on headphones, his collaborators Bawo and Swindle relaxing with friends. Each flicker between different rooms exploring the power of focus and dedication in life, the viewer gets the sense they are on the journey with Kojey through his mind and lyrics and he lays out his rules for life."I’ve admired Kojey’s work for almost 10 years now - longer than I’ve been directing," says Relta. "So I suppose it makes sense that I placed a lot of importance on this project. Thankfully I had the most wonderful team around me who made my somewhat ambitious creative come to life."We built three adjoining sets, each with their own tones and emotional weight. The song felt militant and authoritative to me, and being Kojey’s first release in several years, I was keen to have his performance shots feel just as impactful, seeing him training in a surreal space & powering the surrounding rooms."I also loved the way Kojey paid homage in the song and we managed to sprinkle in a couple more nods in the video, as well as seeing the next generation taking notes themselves. The entire video was shot in an intense three hour window and looking back it’s all a bit of a blur, but I couldn’t be happier with how it came together."

John Wick meets the 9-5 slog in Relta's rousing promo for Jessie Reyez. The video for New York Baby boasts a clash of nostalgic, office-core aesthetics and action film mayhem, building to a bloody, visceral climax. Tied together by a rather breezy, anachronistic performance setup (complete with vintage Macs on plinths), it's a captivating, heart-pounding visual with plenty of standout moments.

NODE directs a striking promo for Berlin-based experimental pop artist Gabriel Gifford. The video for Barking Dogs Seldom Bite was shot at Hackney’s Moth Club, and draws inspiration from a 'cult-like' experience Gabriel had at a local spiritualist church with his father, months before his suicide. A surreal experience that seemed to reflect the nuance and eccentricity of community, mental health, and the supernatural. The video explores these themes through a contemporary lens, with the cast of Seirian Griffiths, Caterina Danzico, Genevieve Reeves, and Tia May Hockey each performing iterations of their ‘dog’ - a physical manifestation of the characters' individual demons and trauma.Building to an electric finale, the focus on raw movement and primal instinct erupts in a strobe-lit montage, cut in a hyperactive and chaotic way. Impressive work with an electric energy.

As Jessie Reyez gets together with Lil Wayne to candidly celebrate the pleasures of sex, Relta keeps things sweet, slick and wholesome in the impressive video.Continuing a prolific run this year that's included videos for Ray Blk and Baobei, the British-Persian director steps it up for the Canadian singer/rapper's sizzling RIDIN, creating a good humoured fantasy where both Jessie and Wayne radiate warmth amid the lyrical raunchiness. From a bedroom space where she sits in her underwear, Jessie rises above her bed, into Toronto skyline, while an earthbound version of herself crashes into Lil Wayne's pad, to introduce his contribution. Relta also reflects the intimacy of the song, with tracking close-up shots over glowing skin, craftily intercut with the performance. A fine execution of a playful pop video that gets the best out of both artists - and a big step forward for Relta.[imgtoken data:1] [imgtoken data:2]

Relta directs a stirring one-take performance for Ray BLK. The video for Courage captures a performance that articulates the artist's experiences with an abusive ex-partner.Inside an intimate theatre setting, the performance moves to reveal an abstract, minimalist set, where Ray and a male character interact and recreate the fraught dynamic she references in the lyrics, before returning to the first space after a climactic confrontation. It's a tight, focussed video that is full of inspired visual elements, and perfectly represents the emotional journey of the track.

Luigi Calabrese directs a murderous love story for LA-based singer-songwriter Cate Tomlinson. The video for Half Lover is an ode to 80's slashers, complete with blood, violence and low budget aesthetic. It starts like every good horror film - at a cabin in the middle of the woods, far away from civilisation and the emergency services. Diving full-throttle into a conceptual horror storyline, the video has the same unabashed sense of fun as slasher films of the era, elevated with filmic cinematography and an inspired revenge storyline.Intercut with a high-energy performance section, it's a brilliant visual that will leave viewers feeling like they picked up a VHS at their local Blockbuster. Ah, the good old days...
