PinkPantheress 'Illegal' by Ethan & Tom

Rob Ulitski - 14th May 2025

A boy spirals headlong into PinkPantheress's tartan-patterned world in Ethan & Tom's captivating mixed-media video for Illegal.

When the boy - played by Sekou Diaby - opens a box of jellies and offers one to Pink, she declines. Sekou eats one, and then trips out into a vibrant animated dreamworld - comprised of Pink's unmistakeable sillhouette against rapidly changing tartan (or plaid) designs, that distinctive, Y2K-influenced aspect of her personal style. Certainly enough to put his poor head in a spin.

Playfully flipping between the live action and the animation - created by Black Anime Animation Studio - it's a superb showcase for Pink, both the astute songwriter/producer and blossoming pop star. Ethan & Tom have zeroed in upon the incisive storytelling and deadpan wit of her lyrics, her attitude and iconic look, with humour and visual invention.

Following their wacky adventure last year for another unique British musical talent - Geordie Greep - this is another big step forward for the directing duo into the pop world. They have done themselves - and the marvellous Pink - proud.
